Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — An Albuquerque hiring event for 25 new transit security officers comes days after a a bus driver allegedly stabbed a passenger to death. APD Chief Harold Medina says more security on buses will cost money. Adding, what we were funded for with council, and what was transferred over to APD, accounts for 20 positions. All the positions that were given to the police department in order to protect buses have been utilized. But there are 59 buses on the streets each and every day. Medina says the department would have to be funded somewhere near 200 positions to be able to have a day shift and a swing shift for all the operating hours of a bus out on the roads.
