MESILLA, N.M. — A Doña Ana County sheriff’s deputy has died following a crash on Interstate 10 that occurred while he was on duty.
Deputy Antonio Aleman, 33, was driving his patrol vehicle on July 8 when it collided with the rear of a semi-truck near Avenida de Mesilla. Emergency responders transported him to MountainView Regional Medical Center, where medical staff attempted life-saving measures. He was later pronounced dead.
Aleman had served with the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office since April 2021. He is survived by his wife and two children.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office described Aleman as a “valuable asset” to the department and said he would be deeply missed. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
The department also expressed gratitude to Doña Ana Fire Rescue, New Mexico State Police, U.S. Border Patrol, and Las Cruces emergency services for their support during the response.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
