SANTA FE, N.M. — New Mexico’s new automatic voter registration system is already showing strong results, with more than 10,000 new voters added since the program launched at the beginning of July.
The initiative, led by Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver, automatically registers eligible residents when they visit the New Mexico Motor Vehicles Division (MVD) to apply for or renew a driver’s license or other identification documents.
“With the new program in effect, the very first day we saw 1,500 new or updated voter registrations come through,” said Toulouse Oliver.
Previously, MVD customers were given the option to register to vote. Now, the process is automatic for eligible individuals, streamlining access to the ballot.
- Eligible voters are automatically registered
- Non-citizens and minors are screened out
- Voters can opt out or change party affiliation at any time
The program is part of a broader effort to modernize and expand voter access in New Mexico. Officials say the system is designed to be secure, efficient, and inclusive, while still giving voters control over their registration status.
