RUIDOSO, N.M. — Catastrophic flooding swept through the Village of Ruidoso on Tuesday, reaching over 20 feet and claiming the lives of three people, including two children. Officials say the floodwaters surpassed last year’s historic burn scar floods, marking one of the most devastating natural disasters the village has faced.
Flash Flood Emergency Declared
A flash flood emergency was issued at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, urging residents to seek higher ground. The hardest-hit areas include Upper Canyon, Brady Canyon, Cedar Creek, and Paradise Canyon. According to officials, approximately 65 swift water rescues were carried out, with people trapped in homes, vehicles, and even trees.
Victims Identified
Mayor Lynn D. Crawford confirmed the deaths of a 4-year-old girl, a 7-year-old boy, and a man in his 40s or 50s, all swept downstream by the floodwaters. Their names have not been released. A Fort Bliss soldier and his spouse were also injured in the flooding; their children were among the deceased.
“We were there, and now again we’re not,” said Mayor Crawford. “The biggest catastrophe of all is the three lives that we lost.”
Damage and Displacement
Officials estimate 30 to 50 homes have been destroyed, with that number expected to rise. Around 18 to 20 people are currently displaced and staying at the Village Community Center. All shelters remain open to those in need.
Emergency Response
The New Mexico National Guard has deployed 70 members and a Black Hawk helicopter to assist with ongoing search and rescue operations. A missing persons hotline has been set up at (575) 637-0398.
Ruidoso Downs Impacted
The flooding also overwhelmed Ruidoso Downs Race Track, which had recently undergone flood mitigation efforts. The second leg of the Triple Crown quarter horse racing has been canceled. Track officials are assessing damage and prioritizing safety.
“Our thoughts are with all those affected,” Ruidoso Downs said in a statement. “We are stronger together. #ruidosostrong”
