
CARLSBAD, N.M. — New Mexico State Police are investigating a police shooting involving a Carlsbad police officer that occurred Tuesday morning following an armed robbery report.
According to NMSP, officers with the Carlsbad Police Department responded to a robbery at the Stripes gas station on West Pierce Street. A man matching the suspect’s description was later spotted near North 6th Street and West Church Street.
The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Gerald Barron, fled on foot when approached by police. Authorities say Barron was seen reaching into a backpack during the pursuit, and despite repeated commands to stop, an officer fired his weapon.
Barron was initially taken to a local hospital and later flown to Lubbock, Texas, for further treatment. His current condition has not been released.
Barron is facing multiple charges, including:
- Armed robbery
- Resisting, evading, or obstructing an officer
- Additional charges are pending
The New Mexico State Police is leading the investigation into the shooting. No officers were reported injured during the incident.
