Albuquerque, NM – The youngest suspect in the 2023 killing of bicyclist Scott Habermehl has now been formally charged with murder. Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman announced that the child, now 12 years old, was 11 at the time of the incident.
According to prosecutors, the child is also a suspect in multiple burglary cases dating back to when he was just 10 years old.
The case stems from a deadly incident last year in which Habermehl, a local cyclist, was killed. Authorities say the child was one of five juveniles involved.
One of the teens has already pleaded guilty and will remain in juvenile detention until the age of 21. Two others are still facing murder charges. Prosecutors have stated that all five individuals will be tried as juveniles under current law.
The case has drawn public attention due to the ages of those involved and has sparked broader conversations about youth crime and accountability in New Mexico.
