ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In response to a series of fires in the Bosque — two in June and another this week — the Albuquerque Police Department is launching a new drone patrol program aimed at fire prevention and public safety .
Mayor Tim Keller and Chief Harold Medina announced the initiative today. The city has invested in 10 drones—each equipped with thermal imaging, anti-collision systems, and a range covering seven to eight miles, flying up to 45 mph—for use starting this Fourth of July. One drone will patrol at a time, launched from a central command. Thanks to integrated heat sensors along Central, Rio Grande, and Rio Bravo, fires can be detected and verified in under ten minutes.
The drones offer real-time overhead surveillance, helping police spot early signs of fire or suspicious activity. Chief Medina emphasized they “can cover ground that officers can’t,” enabling faster deployment of officers and potentially deterring those intent on starting fires.
Local residents have reacted positively. One Bosque neighbor remarked, “It’s not that invasive … any extra eyes in the sky is good”
