Authorities in Luna County say they’ve arrested a couple after finding a young child living alone in a shed — with no running water, no electricity, and surrounded by animal feces.
The Luna County Sheriff’s Office says 40-year-old Pablo Aguilera and 36-year-old Marisela Aguilera were arrested and charged with child abuse after deputies conducted a welfare check earlier this month. That’s when they found a young child living in what they described as inhumane conditions behind a home on Lucca Road near Deming.
Deputies say the child had been living in the shed for an extended period of time and had little access to basic necessities. He was immediately taken into protective custody.
According to investigators, the couple is related to the child, though their exact relationship hasn’t been confirmed publicly. They’re now both facing felony child abuse charges.
Officials say the investigation is ongoing and more charges could be added as the case develops.
