Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Bernalillo County Fire Marshal Joel Gallegos says that considering the triple digit heat numbers and the recent trail rescues, it’s important for hikers to do some planning before setting off. First, tell people where your’e going and make sure your phone is fully charged. He encourages people that are first-time hikers to take it easy. Go on a small hike and get familiar with the trail. Then every time you go, you can expand your hike. If you’re familiar with your area, you’re going do a lot better in the Sandias. Always be prepared with water for the heat of the day. In addition, rescuers say many people get in trouble when their hike takes longer than planned, or they go off the trail and they’re not prepared for the chill of the night.
