Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Superintendents and school districts across New Mexico are suing the state’s public education department for a rule mandating 5-day school weeks. The rule says public and charter schools have at least 180 instructional days each school year, making school districts who have a four-day school week shift to five-days to meet the requirement. School boards claim the department never gave them a reason as to why this would help education. New Mexico House Republicans requested to join the lawsuit writing, stating they’re disappointed the governor and PED continue to push forward with an unworkable rule which will negatively impact most school districts.
