Electronic communication records requests are increasing

Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — The latest report from the New Mexico Attorney Generals office shows that last year, New Mexico law enforcement obtained 2.7 billion electronic communication records in the course of their investigations. State law requires law enforcement agencies to report their electronic search and data collection efforts. In 2023, those agencies obtained electronic location information over 4.5 million times. Which is more than double the previous year. APD has its own “Digital Intel Team”, launched in 2021, which sifts through electronic evidence, and also more than doubled the number of times they sought electronic communication content in 2023 compared to 2022.
