BernCo and partners extend scrap tire amnesty days

Bernalillo County, NM (KKOB) — After much success, BernCo Planning and Development Services, along with City of Albuquerque Solid Waste and the New Mexico Tourism Department are extending the Free Scrap Tire Amnesty Days. The initiative, which kicked off last year, allows residents from unincorporated areas of Bernalillo County, outside the city limits, to turn in up to nine tires free of charge at designated times and locations. During the first nine events 5,575 tires were collected. That amounts to more than 89 tons.

The next event is scheduled for Sunday, April 14 from 8 a.m. to noon at Pajarito Mesa Community Center, 9520 Pajarito Rd. SW. Tires from businesses will not be received.

“These events have generated an incredible response from the community. We are thankful to those that have participated, and we encourage other residents to take advantage of this free opportunity to dispose of unwanted tires. A big thanks to our partners at the city and the state because this program would not be possible without their support. We look forward to seeing our community members at this weekend’s event and at any of those remaining on our schedule,” says Planning and Development Services Director Nick Hamm.

The program is made possible through the New Mexico Tourism Department’s Clean and Beautiful Grant Program, which was awarded to the county in September.
