Bernalillo County’s emergency rental assistance funds expended

Bernalillo County, NM (KKOB) — After three years, Bernalillo County’s Emergency Rental Assistance funds have been expended.

As part of Covid relief funding from the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), Bernalillo County was awarded $17.4 million for the Bernalillo County Relief of Emergency Needs for Tenants (RENT) assistance program to support households that were unable to pay rent and utilities due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. With the federal funding, Bernalillo County implemented its Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) in April 2021. The funds were fully expended by April of this year. In total, 2,898 households in unincorporated Bernalillo County, outside the city limits, were helped to alleviate rent arrears and prevent evictions.

“We would like to acknowledge the team at Bernalillo County who executed delivery of this funding,” says County Manager Julie Morgas Baca. “Because of their hard work we were able to help thousands of Bernalillo County residents who were facing unprecedented times.”

Over the span of the program, the Bernalillo County Emergency Rental Assistance program also worked alongside the Metropolitan Courts and provided housing stability services.
