Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — A rematch is in store for New Mexico’s District 2 with Saturday’s announcement by Gabe Vasquez he will be running again for the seat he narrowly won in 2022. Republican Yvette Herrell announced her candidacy for the seat in April. Vasquez had beat Herrell by 1,350 votes in the election where about 192,000 ballots were cast. It took place during the first year of the newly drawn Congressional District 2, which now includes parts of Albuquerque.

During his announcement, Vasquez touted he’d recently introduced a bill forcing oil companies to pay into a trust which oil workers could access. They could use the money to reimburse healthcare costs related to methane or smog exposure while working in the oil fields. If Vasquez wins again, it’d be the first time a Democrat held the seat for two consecutive terms since Harold Runnels of Lovington had the district from 1971 to 1980.
