Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Thursday at approximately 10:42am Albuquerque Fire Rescue was dispatched to 111 Coors Blvd NE at the Smiths Grocery Store for reports of an explosion.
Ladder 7 arrived on scene and reported light smoke coming from the front corner of the building. As additional units arrived on scene Engine 14 made entry into the store and was able to locate the maintenance room from where the initial explosion was reported.
A small fire was extinguished as employees of the store were being evacuated. Two employees that were in the maintenance room working on H-VAC repairs were injured as a result of the initial explosion. Rescue 14 and Rescue 7 arrived on scene and transported the two injured civilians to a local hospital. Both of the patients sustained significant burn injuries and were listed in critical condition.
On scene AFR personnel continued their operation efforts to ensure that the building was clear of any hazards. The air quality was checked extensively as firefighters worked to ventilate the store.
APD was notified due to the initial explosion.
Several of the adjacent businesses were also evacuated to ensure no exposures had occurred. There were no reports of injuries to firefighters.
In total there were 16 AFR fire apparatus on scene to assist with operations.
