Ruidoso, NM (KKOB) — The Public Service Company of New Mexico is being sued over the McBride fire. The blaze in Ruidoso killed two people and destroyed more than 200 homes last month. The lawsuit contends the fire may have done less damage or been avoided if the company had maintained its powerline easements. On April 12, 2022 the lawsuit claims high winds toppled a tall pine tree which landed on PNM utility lines, igniting the fire. The suit filed by three households affected by the blaze alleges that the tree was “rooted in shallow soils, on a steep slope”. However, the official cause of the fire remains under investigation. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for destroyed property.
