Mayor Hull Provides City Manager Hiring Process Update

Rio Rancho, NM (KKOB) –Mayor Gregg Hull announces that the Rio Rancho Governing Body, which is comprised of six City Councilors and the Mayor, has completed the first required step in the City Manager hiring process.

“The City Manager search process was delayed and extended due to COVID considerations. Because of this, for transparency, and to help inform regarding the unique and required hiring process that must be followed in Rio Rancho, my hope is that the public finds this update beneficial,” said Mayor Hull.

Pursuant to the City’s Charter, the Governing Body has screened and ranked candidates for the City Manager position, and provided four names to the Mayor for consideration. The Mayor is required to receive a minimum of three names and no more than five names.

The four finalists for the City Manager position are:

  • Thomas Hutka, Pompano Beach, Florida
  • Shawn Henessee, Vancouver, Washington
  • Frederick Gardiner, McDonough, Georgia
  • Matthew Geisel, Rio Rancho, New Mexico

The four finalists were derived from 33 applications reviewed by the Governing Body and an interview with six candidates.

The next legally required step in Rio Rancho’s City Manager hiring process is for the Mayor to appoint the City Manager from the list of four names provided to him for consideration.  Pursuant to the City Charter, the Mayor has until Tuesday, April 13 to make his determination, notify the Governing Body of his decision, and come to terms on an employment contract with his appointee.  This week, Mayor Hull plans on interviewing each finalist again, one-on-one, as part of his determination and appointment process.
