PRC/PNM Hearing Underway

THE NEW MEXICO PUBLIC REGULATION COMMISSION HAS BEGUN A HEARING ON PNM’S PLAN TO REPLACE THE POWER THAT WILL BE LOST WHEN THE COAL-FIRED SAN JUAN GENERATING STATION CLOSES IN 2022. THE HEARING IS EXPECTED TO LAST INTO NEXT WEEK…BUT IT MAY BE MONTHS BEFORE A DECISION IS REACHED. PNM SAYS THE LEAST COSTLY OPTION TO REPLACE THE POWER INVOLVES A MIX OF SOLAR, WIND, NATURAL GAS AND BATTERY STORAGE. BUT CRITICS SAY NATURAL GAS PLANTS WOULD ALSO HAVE TO BE SHUT DOWN TO MEET STATE MANDATES OF BEING EMISSIONS-FREE IN TWO DECADES.
