Snuffing Out Campfires

WHEN IT COMES TO CAMPFIRES, SAFETY FIRST. JULIE ANNE OVERTON IS THE PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICER FOR THE SANTA FE NATIONAL FOREST. SHE SAYS, A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, THEY FOUND OVER 45 ABANDONED CAMPFIRES AFTER A BUSY WEEKEND. OVERTON TELLS US FIRE PREVENTION OFFICERS CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH IN MAKING SURE FIRES ARE PROPERLY EXTINGUISHED.

OVERTON SAYS, WITH LARGE NUMBERS OF CAMPERS EXPECTED OVER THE JULY FOURTH HOLIDAY, THEY’RE WORRIED A CAMPFIRE COULD SPARK A FOREST FIRE. ABANDONED CAMPFIRES ARE THE LEADING HUMAN CAUSE OF WILDFIRES.
