A new initiative starting Friday, June 9th, in New Mexico. The Albuquerque Journal reports that pharmacists across the state can now get training that will legally allow them to prescribe and then provide women with birth control pills in much the same way various other vaccinations and flu shots are administered.
It’s an effort to address the state’s shortage of not only doctors in general, but OB-GYNs specifically. Dale Tinker with the New Mexico Pharmacists Association tells the Journal it’s a real problem in rural areas as the state reports a rise in unattended pregnancies.
The training for pharmacists has developed by doctors and nurses working with the ACLU and other community groups.
