Good news for New Mexico state workers. The state appears to be ending the current fiscal year at the end of this month in the black. The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that has Governor Martinez lifting the hiring freeze she put into place in March due to state cash reserves being down. Martinez has also dropped plans to force furloughs on state employees.
Some state lawmakers questioned the hiring freeze, saying it would burden state workers still employed with higher workloads.
A recent analysis by the legislative staff found nearly 20 percent of state jobs not filled, compared to unfilled state jobs in recent years hovering in the 13 to 15 percent level.
