The Albuquerque Police Department says the suspect who died last Friday after being tasered during his arrest suffered a medical episode. APD Spokesperson Celina Espinoza tells the Albuquerque Journal it happened when an officer used “less lethal means” in an attempt to arrest the 45-year-old man at Cottonwood Mall.
The suspect was said to be armed with a screwdriver and ran more than a mile with the officer in pursuit. He ran to Bosque Circle near Alameda. Police also say he threatened a passerby who tried to help the officer apprehend the suspect. The officer administered CPR, but the man died at the scene.
The OMI is investigating.
