Hearing This Week on LANL Fire

A hearing is set for Wednesday in Santa Fe over safety concerns at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board will hold the hearings at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center.

A fire broke out in mid-April in a section of LANL where plutonium cores for nuclear weapons are made. Lab officials say the fire was quickly put out and there were only minor injuries. But the Santa Fe New Mexican reports the safety board in unsure if the lab can continue to handle increasing amounts of plutonium in the future.

A number of experts are expected to testify at Wednesday’s hearing.
