New Mexico is seeing an early start to the plague season. Three cases have been reported in dogs in the East Mountains already this year. Dr. Paul Ettestad with the State Department of Health says plague in humans is rare but it does happen and it can be serious if not treated quickly.
There have been a total of eight human plague cases in New Mexico the past two years, and one fatality. Plague can be transmitted through infected fleas from dead rodents.
