Would it make sense to merge APD with the Bernalillo County Sheriffs Office? City and County officials are now beginning to discuss the idea. County Commissioner Wayne Johnson is not in favor.
Johnson tells News Radio KKOB APD has too many issues right now. He compares it to a guppy swallowing a troubled whale, with APD being the whale and the Sheriff’s Office being the guppy. He says it’s not the way to fix the police department’s problems. He says any merger talk should wait until the police department fixes some of the issues it’s been dealing with in recent years including Department of Justice reforms.
The plan would also include merging the city and county fire departments. Supporters of the idea say a merger of public safety agencies would help eliminate jurisdictional issues.
