The process of removing contaminated underground water at Kirtland Air Force Base continues. Dennis McQuillan with the State Environment Department says well over 100 million gallons of water have been pumped out in the past year and a half.
McQuillan says the underground fuel leak first discovered nearly 20 years ago has not affected ABQ’s drinking water. He says they’re testing the drinking water wells every month, and have no detectable contamination in any of the wells.
McQuillan says once the contaminated water is removed, it’s purified, and injected back into the aquifer to help preserve ABQ’s drinking water.
