The New Mexico Department of Health says the over-use of antibiotics has led to bacteria that are resistant to antibiotic treatment and that’s become a major public health threat. Health officials estimate that at least a third of the antibiotics prescribed in the US are unnecessary. Thousands of people die every year from antibiotic resistant bacteria and other related complications.
