Santa Fe Teacher Scores Milliken Education Award

Another Santa Fe teacher is honored with the Milliken Education Award. Amy Biehl Community School 2nd grade teacher Melissa Kovac is the second Santa Fe teacher to win the award, which includes $25,000 and a trip to New Orleans. 35 teachers are honored as the best nationwide.

Kovac likes to teach in costume. She says she does it for the kids because they get a kick out of grown ups dressing up and acting everything out at the head of the class. Kovac has come to school as Wonder Woman and as a bee to teach her students about bees.

She says she’ll use the $25,000 on tuition. She’s working on her Masters in Educational Leadership. Kovac’s proficiency rates improved by 45% in math last year and 35% in reading.
