Sandy/Perez Trial Underway

It’s one of the most closely watched trials in recent memory here in Albuquerque. Opening statements are underway in the second degree murder trial of former APD cops Keith Sandy and Dominique Perez. They’re charged with the shooting death of homeless camper James Boyd in March 2014 after a four-hour standoff in the Sandia Foothills.

The incident made national and even international news. Boyd was schizophrenic and prosecutors say the shooting was not justified. At the time he was killed, Boyd was holding two small knives. APD brought in a canine, shot him with bean bags, then bullets.
