Pets of the Week | Mar 5

Many of our shelter dogs leapt into new homes during our Leap Year adoption special weekend.  During the event  Saturday and Sunday 133 pets found homes. Desiree Cawley our fearless marketing director said that the day prior to the adoption special (Friday) people were so anxious to find their new companions we had a much larger number of adoptions than on a normal Friday. There were some very smart people that decided to beat the rush on Saturday to find their forever companion.  With Friday’s adoptions included over those three days there were 161 adoptions.

Good news! KKOB’s featured very handsome German Shepherd mix Duke went home but surprisingly not until Tuesday. Marley the mellow yet fun loving dog that is perfection when it comes to playing fetch is still residing at our Eastside shelter so come on down and take her home, if you want to play a polite fun game of fetch.

Seven (ID # A  1507216) is an 9 year old, female tricolor Pit Bull Terrier mix. She is a great smaller size weighing only 42 pounds. Yes, there is something in that gene mix on the much smaller size….perhaps some Beagle? She has a great heart marking that frames her sweet little face.  Seven was adopted from AWD as a youngster in 2007. Somehow this mellow gal came in after getting lost from her home. Yes, we too wonder why no one came to get their beloved pet. We gave her the name Seven and she does not seem overly fond of it so please, give her a lovely new name when you adopt her. Seven walks nicely on leash and enjoys taking daily walks with a person. She is an easy going well behaved gal. After a nice walk she enjoys just chilling and relaxing lying at your feet enjoying conversation with some easy petting or a belly rub. Seven is a talented lady. She knows the cues for sit, down and shakes paw if you ask politely. Even though we consider her a senior pet, due to her size 9 is really not old. She would be perfect for a mature home or just one that is on the calmer side and children over 12 should do well with Seven.  Seven hasn’t been playful with other dogs but is nice meeting and saying hello to her fellow canines. Seven is an affectionate companion and one of our volunteer favorites. Come to the Eastside shelter to meet Seven. She would love to curl up at your feet in her very own home. We have several morning volunteers walking dogs on Saturday mornings and she is also used as a helper with staff during temperament testing so if Seven is not in her kennel ask someone to find her for you.

Jayden (ID# A 1191124) is a 1 year & 6 month old, female reddish golden Labrador Retriever mix. She weighs 47 pounds. Jayden is a lovely slightly taller think lady. If she sounds a bit familiar you might remember that she was a featured pet just before Christmas. She has many fans both staff and volunteer that love, love, love our Jayden. She was adopted on Christmas Eve and we thought…best present ever! Sadly she got away from her home and they never came in to reclaim her. Actually coming back is a good thing if her people did not care enough to come looking for her. These sad instances are really frustrating to those of us working in shelters. We know Jayden will be a super companion so in hopes of finding the right home this time we are featuring her again. Let me tell you just a few of Jayden’s many attributes. She is quite mellow and quiet in her kennel. She could use some practice on leash as she is determined to get where she is going. She is the perfect blend in a companion as she likes to run and fetch, she enjoys greeting other dogs, and then likes to snuggle up for some affection and petting. She sits so nicely for treats and is a real love bug. She is not obsessed with playing fetch. Most times she brings it back but if distracted by a person she knows or a doggy friend next door she prefers to say hello. After a spurt of running around the yard or a bit of fetch, ending play time by relaxing for a belly rub will be perfect. Jayden could do well with a younger person/couple who like to run, hike or perhaps beginning and ending the day with a walk enjoying our N.M. sunsets. If you have another dog please bring him/her in to meet Jayden. Although not super interested in playing with every dog she meets she has a few doggie friends that she does enjoy a bit of play time with. Jayden is a smart dog and eager to learn. One of her favorite volunteers has been teaching Jayden to work the agility hurdles, tunnel and weave poles. This thinks this learning this is quite fun and loves her treat rewards.  Maybe you and Jayden could have a new calling by learning agility together. You will find Jayden in the first building at our Eastside shelter. Since she is so popular she may be out with a volunteer so please have someone find us so you can fall in love with your future best friend.
