Pets of the Week | Feb 6

Last weekend poor Rosie the Redbone coonhound tore a toenail so has been spending time in our clinic healing.  She is still available for adoption so please ask and someone can still make introductions for you. Yauni the sweet German Shepherd is also still available.

We have too many truly great dogs it is always difficult for me to choose which dog to feature. Just this past week a customer commented they just could not believe what nice looking big dogs and cute little fluffy dogs that are in need of homes.  It always makes me sad when I find an older dog in our kennels. We volunteers tend to be so surprised at the reasons they are surrendered and also that someone did not come looking for a beloved pet that got lost. There are many advantages to adopting an older dog so perhaps our first featured pet Reina is your match. If you have lots of energy and like bigger dogs then Franko our second dog would love to meet you.

Reina (ID# A 0980348) is a 9 year old, female black & white German Shepherd mix. She is a good size weighing 66 pounds. This sweet loving girl came to us a stray. She was found after having been attacked by other dogs. Poor girl spent quite a bit of time in our clinic. Her neck was shaved to ensure she healed well. During that time she very much wanted to have time out with people. Each day we would walk by and speak gently to her offering kind words until she was allowed to be out in the kennel area.  Although her lovely fur is just now coming back she is happy to be able to take walks and get love and attention. Reina is doing just fine now and ready for her forever home. Reina is a gentle easy going girl. She enjoys taking walks and is great on leash. She gravitates to people and happily steps up to greet them.  Even though she has healed she has some old scar tissue so she is more comfortable walking in a harness rather than something that can pull around her neck. Since we walk her on a harness she is patient while we put it on and comfortable wearing it. Reina is eager to please and politely sits when requested to do so. She is affectionate and likes to give little kisses when having individual time with staff or volunteers. We see Reina doing well in a calmer mature home or a family home with children 10 and over that will understand the use of the harness. Reina loves to have her neck gently rubbed and ears tickled. There are many advantages to adopting a companion a bit older. We think Reina should be easy to house train as she immediately takes care of business as soon as she gets out. Those wild and crazy puppy days are behind her. She bonds quickly and shelter dogs really do make the best pets, they know how lucky they are. Reina has many years to offer love and companionship so someone will be equally lucky bringing her into their lives. You will find her in our farthest building at the Eastside shelter. When she came out from the clinic there just was no other kennel available at the time. We guarantee she will grab your heart. What a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day by opening your heart and home to a pet in need of a home.

Franko  (ID# A 1720951) is a 3 year old, male tan & white American Pit Bull Terrier mix. Franko is a big boy weighing 74 pounds. He is in great shape and all muscle. Franko gets frustrated in his kennel and he must be seen out away from the kennel noise to meet the real Franko. He is in our Pit Bull Ambassador program and a great representative of his breed. Dogs in this program learn how to harness their energy into productive areas. They learn fun practical skills along with getting lots of exercise love and attention. Franko has his very own harness and walks nicely relaxed loose leash. He is a pleasure to walk. He is very smart and has been attentive to his trainers. He has great eye contact and has learned sit, down and shakes paws taking treats nicely actually quite a gentle boy. Initially we take him out to run off his energy so he finds it easier to focus with his person. He could be a hiking or jogging partner. Dogs are individuals and we have to find what they enjoy and the best toys and activities for them. Franko loves toys often tossing them high into the air. This is much better than a game of tug. Although many dogs enjoy and play tug nicely Franko gets overly aroused with this kind of toy. This is actually very common in many different breeds. When dogs get overly aroused they tend to forget their manners and are harder to calm down although this is where his skills come in. Just ask him to sit and he quickly complies. He has been very friendly and outgoing. This very loveable boy enjoys hugs and is quick to give kisses. He has accompanied volunteers to the park. Franko wanted to follow his person into the backseat, a very polite boy! He traveled well sitting in the backseat. Come meet this very handsome talented boy at our Eastside shelter.
