It seems many of you were enjoying the Halloween weekend with your families and perhaps you dressed up too. Our two little ladies Betty & Bella Sera did not go home last weekend. They quietly curl up in their bed snuggling until someone comes to their kennel door. They are so friendly and hopeful that their turn for a forever home is coming……..
This week we have a true staff and volunteer favorite that is older but well behaved super sweet and does not act her age. Our second dog loves to play fetch all day and also enjoys doggie play. Our special adoption event started November 6th but lasts through Saturday, November 7th. We have Re-pup-licans and Demo-cats available for adoption. Our staff and volunteers will be on hand to interview prospective adopters to make sure our animals get the right house and we want our adopters to get the right companion to fit their home and lifestyle. Both of our featured dogs will be eligible for the reduced adoption fees.
To meet any of our animals you will need to complete a short adoption questionnaire, meet the dog and have an interview with staff or volunteer. These forms are in the lobby where you can sit down to complete the form and they are also in the hallway between our buildings A & B.
Nina (ID# A 0912480) is a truly wonderful 10 year old, female black Chinese Sharpei mix. She is on the smaller size weighing only 41 pounds. Sometimes the older dogs get forgotten but this girl is one of our most “popular” and well loved dogs at our Eastside shelter. Don’t let her age fool you she enjoys a little sprint and play around the yard. Our staff and volunteers say she is always ready to play. After her walks she is perfectly happy to be a couch potato with you. Nina loves her daily walks and is good on leash. We think she should be easy to house train. She is family friendly and dog friendly. A previous home said she was also good with cats….so pretty close to perfect…wouldn’t you say? When she was just a youngster back in 2006 her parents left her outside all the time and she got lonely so jumped the fence. Thankfully they did not have her long and Nina just wants to be with her people so please keep her inside or crated when you are gone. It appears she will be easy to house train too. Our kennel supervisor loves this “sweet heart”. Nina is often her office companion. She reports that Nina is quiet, extremely well behaved and has never had a mistake in the office. She just curls up on a bed next to the desk. She has been sweet mellow and calm. If someone approaches she is quick to give gentle greetings. When Nina is left alone in the office she politely waits on her dog bed waiting for a human to return. Nina is now sporting a lovely bandana given to her by our supervisor. Nina just had a dental on Wednesday and needed to have a couple teeth removed. She is on a soft food diet only for a while until she heals and she is taking some pain meds right now. Like all of the animals in our care we want to make sure Nina’s adopters are a good match for her. In keeping with the spirit of the adoption event we want Nina to find the right house/home. During the special adoption event she will be relaxing and recuperating in our supervisor’s office away from the hustle and bustle. If you want to see her just mention the KKOB featured pet and ask to meet Nina and our supervisor Liz. She will be glad to interview you for the adoption. Hurry on down to meet Nina.
Toti (ID# A 1726399) is a 4 year old, male, black Labrador Retriever mix. He weighs 56 pounds. He has a lovely black coat with some pretty waves along his back. Like so many dogs that come into the shelter he was a bit shy in his new surroundings and really hungry. Toti has acclimated to the shelter well and has been outgoing and friendly. He is eager to come out for play or a walk. True to his breed he has spurts that are quite energetic. He loves to play fetch and drops the ball every time. He loves to take walks. Sadly he does not get out every day so initially he is very excited but after a few minutes he greatly improves. Daily walks with this boy will help perfect his leash skills and remember each adoption comes with a free training class. Toti loves to come to doggie play groups. He enjoys a vigorous game of chase while herding his buddies just a little. As always we are happy to help with a meet and greet between your present companion and your prospective adoptee. Toti was found to be dog friendly on his temperament test and would be a great companion and best friend for a child 10 or over. Toti could be your hiking companion too with proper conditioning. Actually after a few minutes of dog play and he is ready to chill for some attention or just lying around with his buddies. He loves attention and some gentle time where he rests his head in your lap. This playful fun loving boy is at our Eastside shelter.

In 2014, Animal Control personnel responded to 33,981 calls, rescues and other activities for the community. In addition to field work, our personnel are devoted to animal welfare programs such as spay and neuter awareness, promoting pet wellness and educating pet owners.
This week our officers debuted new uniforms we want to make Albuquerque residents aware of. The officers’ new uniforms include black shirts and khaki pants. These new uniforms will help them stand out of the crowd, so that they can be easily recognizable, and will distinguish them for the service they do.
In addition to the new colors, the uniforms include Animal Control badge on the chest and patch on the sleeve featuring a dog, cat and Sandia Mountains.
