Pets of the Week | Oct 24

Our marketing director, Desiree Cawley was pleased to inform me that there were 55 pit bull mixes that attended last week’s training class. Parents had practiced their skills with much improvement in a week and those that missed the first two classes were quite excited the just had a bit more to work on for this coming week.

Saturday October 24th is National Pit Bull Awareness Day! The National Pit Bull Awareness Campaign is a nationwide effort to bring positive awareness and attention to the Pit Bull Terrier. Animal Welfare is providing a day of free education, resources, products and services to people who have Pit Bull Terrier type dogs. It is a special day to focus on these incredible dogs and a day to change perceptions and stereotypes. On this last class for our Pit Bull Training event class attendees will receive two gifts; a busy buddy feeding toy and a folding water bowl so you can take your polite well behaved dog to our many pet friendly establishments. Desiree has compiled a list of those establishments if you are interested. One of our celebrity trainers will show attendees how to do a 10 miniature work out to keep reinforcing those behaviors and tricks learned during the classes. You really don’t have to devote much time to end up with a very well behaved companion. The true key is consistency.

To further celebrate the day we have special adoption fees and other fun goodies and activities. Please see below

Updates on our two featured dogs from last week:

One of our local rescues appreciated gentle Candi’s talents and beauty and took her Thursday. She will be marching in the 7th Annual Pittie Parade at ABQ Uptown. She is hopeful she will find her true love and family home at the event. If you missed your chance to adopt her go to the parade.

Lilly Rose our lab mix went to Colorado to enter training to be a service dog, so we are very happy for her. She was accompanied by 8 other dogs from our East and Westside shelters that are beginning their training to  becoming service dogs. If they do not show the aptitude to be a service dog they will have all their basic training, be house trained and then be adopted out as companions.

Alyx (ID# A 1722287) is a 4 year old, female golden brindle American Pit Bull Terrier mix. She weighs 47 pounds, a great manageable size. Just like any dog breed each dog has its own personalities and within the Pit Bull Terrier breed there are vast differences whether active, mellow, energetic, hiker or couch potato. Once characteristic that is extremely common is that they are cuddle bugs and Alyx it true to that trait. Of course the “mix” in any dog adds to the look and personality of any dog. Alyx is a very sweet gentle sensitive girl. She came to us a stray and remains a little shy initially. It takes a few moments for her to relax with someone new but once she does she is kind of a “Velcro” dog. She craves attention and love. One of our newer volunteers took Alyx out Thursday and said she could not believe she had not walked Alyx before. She is so quiet in her kennel she probably gets paced by even by volunteers but once out of the building all Alyx wanted from this volunteer was some individual attention, love and a nice easy walk. This volunteer also felt Alyx was the sweetest little pittie she has met so far. Alyx loves her daily walks and is good on leash. Alyx is looking for a calmer quiet home and will be a steadfast loyal and very loving companion. Although gentle she has a playful nature and enjoys a short quick run around the yard playing with her favorite people and chasing toys. She is very nice taking walks alongside other dogs and even enjoys greeting other softies. Energetic rowdy dogs are not her cup of tea and we think she probably never lived with another dog as she is a little uncomfortable when they encourage her to play. Alyx should do well with older children or a single or couple that she can be truly devoted to. Those of us that take Alyx out regularly think she would also be a great companion for a mature home where she could put that “Velcro” into action following her mom/dad around the house and curling up at their feet or if lucky share some couch time. You will find Alyx at our Eastside shelter. Remember Alyx is a shy gal at first so give her a few miniatures to get to know you. Once she does she will capture your heart especially when she gently rests her head against your chest giving you gentle kisses.

Roxy (ID# A 1727429) is a 2 year old female white and black Dalmatian mix. Roxy is a very small girl weighing only 32 pounds so she is mixed with something much smaller. She has a bit of the coloring of a Dalmatian. She was surrendered when her family could not longer afford to take care of her. We see this so often and when a dog has come from a happy caring home through a situation like this or an owner’s death the animal is confused and scared. Roxy was a bit timid when she arrived and is still getting used to her new surroundings but she loves to get out for a walk and spend time with people getting attention. She pulls a bit initially on leash due to her joy leaving her kennel. She would enjoy daily walks and lots of love and attention from a new family. She should do well with children 5 and over. Her previous owner mentioned they had a cat and that Roxy was very good with the cat. We can’t test to see if a dog is good with cats so we just love it when we are given such valuable information. We frequently have people coming in looking for a “cat friendly” dog so Roxy could be your perfect match! Roxy is the perfect medium/small size too so come meet her at our Eastside shelter.
