Well we had lots of adoptions last weekend hooray!! But, Trigger our handsome Pit Bull Terrier that looks like a Mastiff and sweet little Chihuahua Whitney are still hopeful. Our volunteers faithfully take them both out for loving and walks but we sure would like to see them find their own forever home soon. Trigger is at our Eastside shelter and Whitney is now at our Lucky Paws location
The second of our series of training classes for our community member that are parents to Pit Bull mixes was very successful. The trainers reported that 41 attendees reported for class. They and their parents did all their home work and practice. The humans were rewarded with coupons for pizza and the doggies were rewarded with really cool toys. This third installment is good dog manners training. I’ve seen this week’s prize toys and they are pretty cool very large colorful tennis balls. There are only two more weeks left. Even if you have not attended the other two you are welcome to attend this class. If you just want to come and observe that would be great too and then come for the finale on Saturday, October 24th which is National Pit Bull Awareness Day.
This week we have a little female Pit Bull Terrier mix that is just as sweet as her name and a second beauty that is as beautiful as her name.
Candi (ID# A 1724268) is a 1 year old, female black & white American Pit Bull Terrier mix. A little smaller Candi weighs 45 pounds. Her family could not longer care for her so they brought her to the shelter. Candi is well behaved, smart and loving. Candi is a bit shy in the kennel but she has some kind of rowdy neighbors. She loves to go for walks and is easy to walk on leash. Candi loves attention and affection. She is such a sweet young girl. She has a playful nature but now a rowdy girl. Candi will make a great companion and would love to have a family that will welcome her into their home. She says she is “move in ready”. Come meet her at our Eastside shelter. Make sure to meet her out of her kennel so you can appreciate her beauty and kind gentle manner.
Lilly Rose (ID# A 1726948) is a 2 year old, female white Flat coated Retriever mix. She weighs 54 pounds. Lilly has a lovely longer coat that will require regular brushing. She also has the cutes freckles on her nose and ankles. She is a family friendly gentle girl. She is good on leash. She loves to take a walk and then lean in for some petting giving kisses in return. She is inexperienced, shy and unsure around other dogs. She probably never lived with nor spent time with other dogs. She was a little nervous as you might expect when she found herself lost in ABQ and came to a shelter surrounding by lots of dogs some of which are frustrated and noisy in their kennels. She quickly found human friends at the shelter and has become a favorite of ours. Come meet this very lovely lady at our Eastside shelter.
FREE PIT BULL TRAINING DURING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER
The City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department is hosting free Pit Bull and Pit mix training every Saturday, at the Eastside shelter during the month of October.
Animal Welfare’s goal is to get much-needed resources to these dogs and the folks who love them. Understanding the breed of a Pit Bull is the first step to being a responsible pet owner. A well-trained Pit Bull can be an ambassador for his or her breed, showing the world that with a loving home and training, Pit Bulls can make wonderful pets. Education and responsible owners are critical in changing the perception of this breed.
Animal Welfare Department staff would like to express heartfelt appreciation to Petco, Pet Safe, and Be Positive! Family Dog Training for their enthusiasm and generous sponsorship in their efforts to help end the current cycle of public misconception and homelessness among Pit Bulls.
