Pets of the Week | October 10

Good news! Gorgeous Collie Shepherd mix Teddy featured last week on KKOB found his forever home! A great family came to meet him, spent a long time with Teddy and fell in love. He now has two human sisters that were so excited taking turns walking him. They will also take him jogging but know that they need to help build Teddy’s conditioning first so he can keep up with the family. The two young girls kind wore Teddy out with all the excitement so we think he must have slept on the car ride to his new home.

The first day of our free pit bull training during the month of October was also a huge success. There were two class times set up during that day. We had so many attending that there were a total of 6 classes that day and 51 Pit Bull mixes attended. A few of these were puppies so kudos to their new parents for starting their lives together in the best way possible. Toward the end of the last class everyone had to dodge a few rain drops but every person and canine had a great time and really benefitted from the day’s events. This weekend will be our second series of classes and we hope to have this one just as well attended. This week is fun and games with your pit. You will learn fun tricks and games to keep him/her occupied, focused on you, entertained and also how to calm them so you will have a more relaxed companion when you leave for work, finish your home chores, begin study time with your kids etc.

 Please see more info below.

This week we have a very sweet little girl that is a lot of fun but first we are featuring another of our very handsome Pit Bull Terrier mixes in honor of our Pit Bull Awareness month culminating on the 24th with National Pit Bull Awareness Day and the last day of our free classes. . National Pit Bull Awareness Day (NPBAD) is a day of appreciation and education designed to change perceptions and stereotypes about pit bulls and their responsible owners. NPBAD was established to educate and foster positive communications and experiences in the communities in which we and our dogs live, and it is an initiative dedicated to restoring the image of the American Pit Bull Terrier.

Trigger (ID# A1714943) is a 4 year old, male, black & tan American Pit Bull Terrier mix. He weighs 61 pounds. He is a gorgeous boy. Trigger looks much like a Mastiff but he is smaller. He came to us because “his mom and dad were not home enough”. He is a very sweet dog and is one of our “potty brigade” so house training should go easily with a little time and patience. Our staff determined that Trigger should do well with children 12 and over. Trigger loves to play with toys.  He is a strong dog but pretty good on leash after his initial excitement about getting out of his kennel. As always we suggest bringing your newly adopted dog to the free training classes that come with an adoption. It is even better to have every family member attend so everyone does the training the same way using the same tools and words. Remember this month every Saturday we have fun training classes devoted to all Pit Bull dogs and Pit Bull Mixes so can bring Trigger and win a prize or perhaps leave with a fun new toy as well as lots of knowledge to keep you and Trigger happy and entertained at home. Trigger already has a couple of talents knowing the cue for sit well and he shakes paw. Trigger loves to rest at your feet for some petting and kisses. He is very hopeful that during this month honoring his breed he will find a forever home. Mom and dad don’t need to be home all day, he understands that. All Trigger wants is a secure loving home with a morning and or evening walk and his very own person to be his lifetime best friend.

Whitney (ID# A 1724761) is a 3 year old, female reddish brown & white Smooth Coated Chihuahua mix. This little girl weighs only 13 pounds. She is family friendly and dog friendly. She has had a few different kennel mates and does well. She also frequently attends our small dog play groups and enjoys a good game of chase with her buddies. Staff and volunteers describe Whitney as “always ready to play”. She can be a vigorous player. She walks very nicely on leash so would be a great walking companion. She also loves to be petted, receive and give affection. She is a happy confident and very friendly dog looking for a family that will appreciate her playful energy. Come meet this loving, fun loving little gal at our Eastside location of AWD.

FREE PIT BULL TRAINING DURING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER

The City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department is hosting free Pit Bull and Pit mix training every Saturday, at the Eastside shelter during the month of October.

Animal Welfare’s goal is to get much-needed resources to these dogs and the folks who love them. Understanding the breed of a Pit Bull is the first step to being a responsible pet owner. A well-trained Pit Bull can be an ambassador for his or her breed, showing the world that with a loving home and training, Pit Bulls can make wonderful pets. Education and responsible owners are critical in changing the perception of this breed.

Animal Welfare Department staff would like to express heartfelt appreciation to Petco, Pet Safe, and Be Positive! Family Dog Training for their enthusiasm and generous sponsorship in their efforts to help end the current cycle of public misconception and homelessness among Pit Bulls.
