It seems our weather kept people away from coming in to meet our featured pets from last week. Last Saturday the travel was a bit treacherous in the morning and the mayor closed the shelter….a first that I can remember. Sunday was very slow so sadly both Fluffy the mellow shepherd mix and Rusty the playful pit bull mix are still hoping to find their forever home very soon.
Both are still at our Eastside shelter and we would love to introduce you to them in person.
Here are our featured pets this week:
Kaelee (ID# A 1712013) is a 2 year old, female tricolor German Shepherd mix. She is a smaller shepherd weighing 45 pounds. Kaelee came to us quite a shy girl but has blossomed. She is an easy walking partner and enjoys investigating along the way. Kaelee is a fairly soft mannered dog. She could enjoy a calmer home with mature parents. A home that does a lot of entertaining with hustle and bustle would probably be overwhelming for Kaelee. Taking daily walks with her person and curling up sharing a good book or movie would suit her just fine. She does enjoy her doggie play mates especially if they are not too rowdy. Kaelee has been a joy to watch blossom under the care of our staff and volunteers. When she attended her first play group she was a bashful timid girl not quite sure what to do when the other dogs encouraged play or presented play bows. She enjoyed greetings but “what do I do next”? In no time Kaelee learned the fine art of play from her fellow canines. She has a knack for adapting her greetings and play encouragement with very timid inexperienced dogs. Perhaps this is because she was once like they are now. We have used her to film interactions with other dogs due to her excellent social skills knowing just how to teach the other dogs to play and become comfortable with her and us humans in the play yard. Softer dogs find it easy to warm up to Kaelee. One of her favorite play friends is a lovely girl named Tanisha (another play group greeter) they have similar play styles and when together they enjoy a good game of chase. She had been shy but now Kaelee likes to talk to her closest friends during chase play. If you would like to meet this easy going sweet dog you will find her at our Eastside shelter.
Jon (ID# A 1713240) is a 1 year & 1 month old, male black, tan & white Rottweiler mix. Jon has the coloring of a Rottweiler but is much smaller with dashing white markings on his chest and nose. He weighs 56 pounds. Jon is a calm easy going young boy. He is well behaved in his kennel and you will find him curled up in his bed until you speak his name. Stop at his kennel door and he will calmly sit waiting to come out or a walk, attention or meeting new friends. He is easy on leash and enjoys taking walks. He loves to be with people and receiving affection. Jon enjoys his dog friends too. He participated in our dog play groups and was quick to initiate some play with his fellow soft play dogs by presenting a play bow with tail wagging. He did well with dogs his size and a few just a little smaller. He is not a rowdy overly energetic dog. He is also a family friendly dog. Jon could be the perfect companion for a family with children or equally good in a mature home wanting a lower energy dog. If you would like to meet this gentle boy you will find him at our Eastside shelter.
Each adoption includes a free training class for your dog. This is a wonderful way for you and all your family members to bond with your new companion. Everyone enjoys a well behaved companion and teaching them new things or tricks is fun and enriching by teaching them to focus and work their brains. You just may find that after training the basics and learning how to help your companion be the best they can be you both may enjoy challenges and go on to advance training and perhaps even agility training.
After you have done your research to determine which breed mix, age and size fits into your lifestyle and the time you have to devote to your companion and you have found your perfect match brining you new companion home may have some challenges you were not expecting. Many of our adopters have sent letters and pictures of their new companions (dogs, cats, bunnies) with the family to our myshelterpet@gmail.com. We just love seeing the dogs we have worked with happy, content and loved. This is what keeps us going so thank you to all that have sent us their pictures and letters. There are some pretty creative moms & dads out there writing letters “from the dog” to AWD. Stop by our “success board” at the Eastside shelter in the hallway between buildings A & B to enjoy a few of the most recent letters and pictures.
