Spunky little Hilda was adopted last weekend. Hunter our sweet loving Australian Cattle dog is hopeful his forever home is coming very soon.
This week we have two delightful little brothers that were surrendered when their parents lost their home and were evicted. They are extremely well behaved in their kennel. They quietly lay curled in their bed spooning each other until someone approaches the kennel door. Then Chip quickly comes over to greet with his tail wagging and Casper never far behind follows suit.
Chip (ID# A 1698120) is a 2 year old, male, black Smooth Coated Chihuahua mix. He weighs 11.4 pounds. Casper (ID# A 1698119) is a 2 year old, male black & white Smooth Coated Chihuahua mix. He weighs 12.6 pounds. I met these two boys when our talented volunteer photographer was taking pictures this last week. Aren’t their pictures lovely? You can see they were very well taken care of. They have gleaming black coats that are soft. Casper’s white tuxedo sparkles. Chip and Casper were curled up in their bed, oh so cutely. When I opened the kennel door Chip happily came to greet me and Casper followed. They were easily leashed and are easy to take for walks. Chip is more confident and outgoing and Casper is a just a little shy. They enjoy taking walks together. Occasionally Casper may be startled by a new sound but Chip is quick to comfort him. They both are very affectionate and enjoy curling up in laps. Casper and Chip are best friends and completely devoted to each other. We would love to find a forever home with love and time enough for two. Yes, two are better than one! These delightful boys are waiting for you at our Eastside shelter.

That time of year is fast approaching. Firework tents seem to be on every corner. With the drought our state is suffering through Fireworks put fear into my heart but our pets also can have severe reactions due to fear from fireworks. Each year we have so many dogs come into our shelter during the days just prior and especially on the weekend of the 4th of July. Even those dogs that have never escaped from their yard previously may just panic while mom and dad are away celebrating with family and friends. Reactions from fear and panic can even happen when the family is home having their own festive celebration. The pets feel the only way to get away from the loud noise is to run. Two of my three dogs have an especially hard time with fireworks. I keep them in the house as much as possible with quick potty breaks hopefully between the bangs. One of my babies has been known to hold in for 24 + hours. He is just too scared to go outside. There are many things you can do to help your pets make it through this difficult time. You might speak to your veterinarian if it is extremely rough for them. Some find thunder-shirts helpful, spraying lavender on their beds, leaving radios or televisions on while you are gone just to name a few. Please do not leave your companions in the back yard while you are gone out of town over this holiday. The information below can also be found on the AWD website, www.cabq.gov/pets.
Please be prepared. It is so hard on pet parents when they come to our shelters desperately searching for their beloved companions.
How to help your pets on the Fourth of July.
July 4 is a wonderful day to celebrate with family and friends, but for animals it is a fearful, stressful and dangerous time. The fireworks often drive pets to act out of character, especially if left outside and unattended. They run away, jump over fences, and leap through screens and windows out of fear.
Animal Welfare is encouraging pet owners to protect their pets from potential harm by taking these simple precautions during the Fourth of July festivities.
Leave your pets at home and indoors. The noise of the fireworks for most pets could cause anxiety, fear and a desire to flee.
- Keep pets in a lit, cool, calm closed room with familiar sounds and chew toys that will help to distract and make the animal feel safe.
- Identification tags and microchips are a must in case the pet escapes. This will help to reunite the pets and the owners quickly and effectively.
- If the pet gets especially stressed, ask your vet for help to calm your pet down.
Should your pet get lost and end up at either shelter, Animal Welfare wants to expedite the process. If your pet already has a microchip, a license and is spayed or neutered, he or she will be returned to you free of charge. All you have to do is pick up your pets at the shelter.
