March 8th’s Pets of the Week

Tammy (ID# A 1689078) she is a 1 year and 1 month old female brindle & white Pit Bull Terrier mix. She weighs 52.8 pounds. Tammy came to our shelter after becoming lost from her home. She was a bit shy when she arrived as you might imagine. Presently she is kenneled by some active fellows and like many of our dogs competes for attention from the passers by. Tammy is a perfect example of why we ask you to take a dog out of the kennel to meet them. Once Tammy is out she walks very nicely on leash and loves to take a walk. She loves to be with people and is extremely affectionate. She is eager to please and already knows the cue for sit well. She is a sweet girl and looking at her picture you can see her curious nature. Tammy has participated in doggie play groups. She can be a bit shy at times when meeting new dogs so we think she may not have had a chance to play or interact with dogs previously. She is not overly playful with other dogs and tends to stay near the humans. Her last play group she ventured into just a little play with softer play style dogs so perhaps she is learning the fine art of doggie play. Tammy is a wonderful ambassador for her breed. She is fairly easy going and quite gentle. She is young with some energy and would love to accompany you to the training classes that come with each adoption. She will have a chance to shine and learn new things. Tammy is an expert in cuddling and sharing affection. This sweet young pittie is located at our Eastside shelter.

Silly (ID# A 1689203) is a 1 year old, female black & brown German Shepherd mix. Silly is smaller only 46.7 pounds. She came to us a stray along with a 10 year old very sweet German shepherd named Misty. Silly is eager to come out for a walk and a bit of play. She can dash the door so her new home will need to be watchful of this when opening doors of the home as well as gates in a yard. She is young and fairly energetic. She could use just a little practice on leash due to her enthusiasm getting out. Those free training classes will give her a chance to learn new ways to focus her energy. She is smart already knowing the cue for sit well. She has participated in doggie play groups. Although she came in with Misty they may not have played a whole lot. Silly is interested in interacting with dogs but not quite sure how to initiate play or reciprocate those invites from other dogs. Each time she participates in a play group she plays just a bit more.  True to her breed she can be vocal during play almost like a referee keeping the group together or if they get a bit rowdy she puts her two cents in and who knows what she is communicating to the other dogs but it is quite a joy to watch. Silly enjoys the water and although a bit early for us to have our kiddy pools out she often plays in the water bucket. You can meet Silly at our Eastside shelter. If you are inclined and have a big heart you might ask to meet Misty (ID# A 1689202) she may be a bit older but would love to go home with her sister, take walks each day, play some fetch and share in your affection.

Save the Date for our 10th Annual Mayor and First Lady’s Dog Ball 2014. Our marketing director Desiree Cawley and Vicki Fisher from Kennel Kompadres are devoting much time and effort getting the ball rolling so to speak for this years event. The event will take place on the evening of Saturday, April 26th at the Crowne Plaza in Albuquerque located at 1901 University NE.  Individual tickets are $100, with a table of 8 at $750. This year marks the 10th year for the annual event which supports the Animal Welfare Department’s Spay/Neuter Voucher Program.  The proceeds go to the Albuquerque Kennel Kompadres, the fundraising partner of Animal Welfare. The theme this year is “let’s lick the problem”. If everyone in our community had their animals spayed/neutered there would be fewer animals in our shelters in need of homes.

Yappy Hour begins at 5:30 p.m. with musical entertainment by Lenin & McCarthy. Meals will be catered by Crown Plaza and will begin at 6:30 p.m. Clark’s Pet Emporium is covering the cost of the meals so when you buy a ticket 100 percent of your contribution will go to Kennel Kompadres.  There will be vegetarian and vegan dinners provided on request. The ladies are working with generous businesses and individuals gathering items for the auction, prizes and items for the silent auction running through out the evening. There will be a spinning wheel, raffle, many prizes and a doggie spa too. Each pet that attends the event will get a zoom groom.  You will have to attend to find out just what that means. People are encouraged to bring their canine best friends, who can also be entered into the Doggie Duds Fashion Contest. In past years there have been some very creative costumes. Master of Ceremonies and auctioneer for the live auction will be our very own Terrie Q. Sayre.  This event is always a fun treat we look forward to each year.  Although it is a Ball the dress for this event is business casual which pleases many of our male volunteers my husband included. Order your tickets on line by going to www.kennelkompadres.org. Tickets should be going on sale fairly soon so visit the website to get the official date or inquiries may be directed to 505-897-0464.

Just in time to celebrate the wearing of the green and St. Patrick’s Day we have a very special adoption event next weekend.
