DOG FATALLY SHOT BY LAS CRUCES POLICE OFFICER

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) An officer-involved shooting along a Las Cruces street has claimed the life of a dog. According to the Las Cruces Sun-News, police are declining to comment on the circumstances that led up to the Wednesday evening shooting. However, police Sgt. Robert Gutierrez says there will be an internal investigation because the officer fired his gun while on duty.

A photo published online by the Sun-News shows the dead dog lying on a sidewalk.

The Las Cruces Police Department has a policy that officers who fire at people to be placed on administrative leave. Gutierez says that policy does not apply to shootings involving only dogs.
