ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) A bill introduced by a New Mexico lawmaker would have computer programming count as a foreign language under the state's academic requirements for public schools. Sen. Jacob Candelaria says enactment of his proposal would encourage students to learn an important and potentially lucrative skill.
According to the Albuquerque Journal, the 27-year-old Albuquerque Democrat's bill says any modern, widely-used computer program would satisfy the requirement.
New Mexico high school students now must complete at least 24 academic units to graduate. At least one of those units must come from a category of classes that includes a language other than English.
