FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) The Navajo Nation's Shiprock Chapter is asking the tribal attorney general whether Tribal Council members facing criminal charges should remain in office. The Daily Times reports that the request for an opinion is a result of an 85-0 vote by the chapter's membership following nearly two hours of discussion Monday.
The resolution says the Navajo people require their tribal leaders to obey tribal laws and it questions whether officials charged with crimes should remain in office.
Special prosecutors are accusing a number of current or former council delegates of misusing tribal discretionary funds. Those funds are established to help Navajos who are facing emergency situations.
