SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) The U.S. port of entry in a southwestern New Mexico city may be reconfigured to make it safer for children crossing the international border to attend school in the United States. A $350,000 proposal by the New Mexico Border Authority for the Columbus port will be presented during the meeting in Albuquerque of representatives from New Mexican and the neighboring Mexican state of Chihuahua.
According to The Santa Fe New Mexican, recent flood damage means that approximately 450 U.S. children who live in Chihuahua now have to walk through mud to get to school bus stops.
The director of the New Mexico Border Authority, William Mattiace, says the proposed work on the U.S. side of the border needs to be mirrored on the other side.
