CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) A bomb vault used during World War II at Carlsbad Army Airfield has a new home. The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports that the 1943 vault was removed from Cavern City Air Terminal on Wednesday and placed at Carlsbad Veterans Memorial Park.
The vault was used to store the Norden Bombsight, which was top-secret during the war. It bears the names and hometowns of airmen and bombardiers who were stationed at the airfield and trained to drop bombs accurately on their targets using the bombsight.
Veterans Memorial Park committee chairman Joe Epstein says the project was funded by Intrepid Potash.
