Shipments Resume at NM’s WIPP Site

NEW MEXICO’S WASTE ISOLATION PILOT PLANT IS BACK IN BUSINESS. IT’S BEEN SIX YEARS NOW SINCE THE REPOSITORY IN SOUTHEASTERN NEW MEXICO TOOK NUCLEAR SHIPMENTS … BUT IT TOOK ITS FIRST SHIPMENT OF NUCLEAR WASTE RECENTLY FROM THE SAVANNAH RIVER SITE SOUTH CAROLINA.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SAYS OFFICIALS SAY THE CASKS BEING SENT TO THE WIPP SITE NOW ARE NEARLY DOUBLE THE SIZE OF THE CONTAINED THE FACILITY PREVIOUSLY TOOK. THE LARGER CASKS ARE ALSO SAID TO EXPEDITE CLEANUP AT FEDERAL SITES AND REDUCE SAFETY RISKS FOR EMPLOYEES.
