Battle Expected Over Gun Legislation

NEW MEXICO’S GOVERNOR FACES A FIGHT WHEN THE LEGISLATIVE BEGINS ON JANUARY 21ST. GOVERNOR LUJAN GRISHAM WANTS A NEW GUN BILL PASSED BY LAWMAKERS THAT WOULD ALLOW JUDGE TO TAKE GUNS AWAY FROM PEOPLE THREATENING TO SHOT THEMSELVES OR ANOTHER PERSON. IT’S CALLED THE “RED FLAG” LAW.

CHANNEL 7 NEWS REPORTS IF IT PASSES, IT’LL ALLOW JUDGES OR A POLICE OFFICER TO SWEAR UNDER OATH THAT SOMEONE WHO OWNS A GUN HAS MADE A THREAT AND TAKE THE GUN AWAY FROM THAT PERSON FOR 15 DAYS. THAT TIME OF 15 MINUTES CAN BE EXTENDED AFTER A HEARING.

THE FIGHT AT THE LEGISLATURE WILL COME FROM THE NEW MEXICO SHERIFFS ASSOCIATION. THE ASSOCIATION SAYS THEY’RE THE AGENCY THAT WILL HAVE TO SERVE A SEARCH WARRANT TO CONFISCATE THE GUN.
