Extended School Years Considered for More of APS

THERE ARE CURRENTLY EIGHT ABQ PUBLIC SCHOOLS THAT HAVE EXTENDED SCHOOL YEARS. NOW, APS IS CONSIDERING EXTENDING THE YEAR FOR EVEN MORE SCHOOLS. THE DISTRICT IS CONSIDERING THE CHANGE FOR ALL ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS, EXTENDING THE YEAR BY UP TO 10 DAYS … ADDING THOSE DAYS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR BUT WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF SPLITTING UP THE 10 DAYS.

APS WANTS PARENT FEEDBACK ON THE PLAN FIRST.

PRESIDENT OF THE ALBUQUERQUE FEDERATION OF TEACHERS, ELLEN BERNSTEIN, LAST MAY SAID IT COULD BE AN ADVANTAGE, ESPECIALLY FOR WORKING PARENTS. AND APS MAY NOT BE THE ONLY DISTRICT IN THE STATE EFFECTED. STATE LAWMAKERS H AVE ALREADY ALLOCATED ABOUT 120 MILLION DOLLARS IN FUNDS TO EXTEND THE SCHOOL YEAR TO CLOSE STUDENTS OPPORTUNITY AND ACHIEVEMENT GAPS.
