Not Seeing Eye-to-Eye on Panhandling

SANTA FE RESIDENTS SAY THEY’RE SEEING AN INCREASE IN PANHANDLERS IN THE CITY … BUT CITY OFFICIALS DON’T AGREE WITH THEM. THE SANTA FE NEW MEXICAN REPORTS CITY OFFICIALS SAYS THERE’S NO EVIDENCE OF MORE PANHANDLERS MOVING INTO SANTA EF … AND A POLICE DEPARTMENT SPOKESMAN SAYS THERE’S NO KNOWLEDGE OF ALBUQUERQUE PANHANDLERS COMING TO SANTA FE EITHER.

TO ASK FOR MONEY ON A STREET CORNER IS NOT A CRIME IN SANTA FE, AND THE CITY NO LONGER BANS PANHANDLING AFTER A COURT RULED A SIMILAR LAW IN ALBUQUERQUE VIOLATED FREE SPEECH RIGHTS. THE PROPOSED BETTER WAY VAN PROGRAM THAT’S MODELED AFTER AN ALBUQUERQUE PROGRAM THAT’S NOW ENDED STARTED LAST YEAR IN SANTA FE WITH FUNDING AND PARTICIPATION FROM THE CITY’S PUBLIC WORKS AND PARKS AND REC DEPARTMENTS.
