NM’s First Human Plague Case Since 2017 Confirmed

NEW MEXICO HAS ITS FIRST HUMAN PLAGUE CASE OF 2019. THE STATE DEPT OF HEALTH SAYS A 72 YEAR OLD MAN FROM TORRANCE COUNTY CAME DOWN WITH THE DISEASE, WHICH IS USUALLY PASSED ON TO HUMANS THROUGH THE BITES OF INFECTED FLEAS THAT LIVE AMONG RODENTS AND RABBITS.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT STAFF HAVE GONE DOOR-TO-DOOR IN THE AFFECTED AREA TO INFORM NEIGHBORS ABOUT THE PLAGUE. THIS IS THE FIRST HUMAN PLAGUE CASE IN NEW MEXICO SINCE 2017 WHEN FOUR PEOPLE CONTRACTED THE DISEASE.
