Paid Parental Leave for UNM Employees

A “PAID PARENTAL LEAVE POLICY” HAS FINALLY COME TO ONE OF NEW MEXICO’S BIGGEST EMPLOYERS: THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO. THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE MADE THE MOVE TO PARENTAL LEAVE FIRST, PROVIDING 12 WEEKS OF PAID LEAVE FOR SOON-TO-BE PARENTS. BUT NOW, UNM HAS FOLLOWED ITS LEAD, STARTING IT’S PARENTAL LEAVE POLICY ON JULY 1ST.

ROB BURFORD HAS WORKED AT UNM FOR 24 YEARS. HE TELLS KOB TV HE HELPED DRAFT AND PUSH THROUGH THE POLICY AFTER HE SAW A PREGNANT EMPLOYEE COME TO WORK EVERY DAY WHEN SHE WAS SICK AND SHOULD HAVE STAYED HOME.

BEFORE THE PARENTAL LEAVE POLICY STARTED, UNM EMPLOYEES HAD TO USE VACATION, SICK TIME AND THE UNPAID BENEFIT OF THE FAMILY MEDICAL LEAVE ACT.
