Casaus Sentence to Could Be Reduced

THE STEPFATHER OF OMAREE VARELA MAY SEE HIS PRISON TIME REDUCED AFTER A RULING FROM THE COURT OF APPEALS LAST YEAR. OMAREE DIED IN 2013 AFTER BEING BEATEN BY HIS MOTHER. THE ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL REPORTS STEPHEN CASAUS HAD HIS CONVICTION FOR CHILD ABUSE RESULTING IN DEATH VACATED.

ON MONDAY, JUDGE STAN WHITAKER WANTS THE ATTORNEYS IN THE CASE TO SEE IF THE COURT IS REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN A FIVE YEAR SUSPENDED SENTENCE WHEN CASAUS IS RESENTENCED TO LESS TIME NEXT MONTH. HE COULD SEE HIS OVERALL SENTENCE LOWERED BY UP TO 20 YEARS. THE JOURNAL SAYS CASAUS FACES AN ADDITIONAL 19 YEARS ON UNRELATED DRUG AND FIREARMS CHARGES.
